The Thumb · farms & equipment

Trucks, trailers and implements from the Thumb, in the months they sit

Sanilac County has more land in farms than any county in Michigan, and the equipment that works it spends its winters parked outside, moved between fields on salted pavement and dirt roads. That combination eats frames. December to March is the one stretch a farm can spare a truck or a trailer for a morning — and it is when our bay is quietest. From Sandusky, Croswell, Yale or Peck it is thirty to forty-five minutes down M-19 or M-25 to Lapeer Rd.

The shop is at 2498 Lapeer Rd, Port Huron, MI, 48060 — one bay, one address. 7 days · 9 AM – 10 PM, by appointment only, with a key drop box for drop-off.

What we can take on the rack

Anything that fits on a two-post lift or can be worked from a creeper: farm pickups, grain and stock trailers, flatbeds and utility trailers, skid-steer and equipment trailers, sprayer and implement frames that can be towed in. The frame, the tongue, the axles and the hardware get the same pass a truck does. Everything is done on the rack at Lapeer Rd — we do not travel to the farm — so it has to be something you can drive or tow in.

  • Farm pickups and one-ton flatbeds — priced off the menu by size
  • Grain, stock, equipment and utility trailers — frame, tongue, axles, deck hardware, quoted by the job
  • Towable implement frames and sprayers
  • Trucks that run the gravel roads the county spreads chloride on in summer

Why dirt roads make it worse, not better

Gravel roads are not a break from the salt. Counties spread magnesium chloride on them for dust control through the summer, and it pulls moisture from the air and stays corrosive on a dry day. A truck that runs dirt roads all year and salted pavement all winter is the hardest case in the trade, and it is the case the Thumb is full of.

Quoted by the job, done in the winter

Several vehicles at one address are quoted once, per unit, and scheduled across a week or two in the idle season so nothing is out of reach when you need it. Heavy scale is knocked off by the hour before the film goes on, so a trailer that has been sitting outside for years is not a lost cause — send a photo through the quote form and you will get an honest answer the same day.

Questions

Questions people ask

Do you rust proof farm trailers and implements?
Yes — trailers, flatbeds and towable implement frames that fit on the lift or can be worked from underneath. The frame, tongue, axles and hardware get the full FLUID FILM® pass, quoted by the job.
Do you come out to the farm?
No. All work is done on the rack at 2498 Lapeer Rd, Port Huron, MI, 48060, so it has to be something you can drive or tow in — a pickup, a trailer, a towable implement. Several units from one farm are scheduled as a block on one morning, or spread across a week, so the drive down happens once. Call (810) 357-3023 if you are not sure a machine fits on the lift.
When is the best time to do farm equipment?
December to March, when the equipment is parked between harvest and planting and the bay is quiet. Trucks that run all year are best done in the autumn like anything else. Seven days a week, by appointment, and the key drop box means the drive down does not have to be in working hours.
How far is Port Huron from Sandusky, Croswell or Yale?
Thirty to forty-five minutes, down M-19 or M-25 to Lapeer Rd in Port Huron. Most jobs are about an hour, so it is a morning.
Can you treat a trailer that is already rusting?
Yes. Heavy scale is descaled first, by the hour, then FLUID FILM® goes straight over what is left and stops it spreading. Send a photo through the quote form for an honest read on a bad one.
